Dean has spent over 10 years practicing as a structural engineer in both the Pacific Northwest and California. In his tenure, Dean has specialized in many different types of prefabrication and modular construction. Dean has worked with various systems including traditional stick frame modular, prefab light frame wood walls and floors, modular shipping containers, steel modular, KoP steel, precast concrete -- over the past few years, he has specialized in mass timber. During his time in the Bay Area of California, Dean supported design and construction for some of the first mass timber projects. These include some of the first CLT installations, the first multi-story glulam post and beam with CLT floor project, and the first multi-story residential MPP project in the country.
During his time in the Bay Area, Dean became heavily involved with design-build pursuits with various general contractors, modular suppliers, and sub-contractors. It was this experience that led him to his transition to the construction side at the end of 2019, when he joined Swinerton’s self-perform mass timber division. With Swinerton, Dean helped permit some of the first type IV-A/B/C projects in Seattle, as well as many other design-assist mass timber pursuits across the west coast. By working for a self-perform contractor, Dean has realized the value of mass timber and a truly integrated kit-of-parts system.
Dean holds a both Master's and Bachelor's degrees in Civil Engineering with structural emphasis from Washington State University. He is also licensed as a Professional and Structural Engineer in Washington, Oregon, and California. Dean lives in his Hometown of Seattle, Washington where he is an avid outdoors enthusiast.
